Why you should listen: Talented and exciting South London artist Last Nubian has teamed up with Swiss Geneva-based producer Sweet Fruity Brunch to create a groovy, fun and utterly infectious 6-track EP titled Babylon Shuffle. Combining dynamic and soulful House music, with moments of incredible broken beat and dub influences, this is among my favourite dance-oriented releases of the year. “call yu out” kicks the project off with sampled sounds, synths, creating an atmospheric feeling, before the thick basslines and the dub groove kick in. It sets the tone for the rest of the project, and oh my is it incredible. The infectious broken beat of “babylon shuffle” featuring Achanté is so groovy and dynamic. Same with “in da morning / shaka”, featuring lovely vocals from Achanté and another incredibly mesmerising groove throughout. “mango in the parish” got an out loud “oouuuuf!” from me after the drums and sub-bass started kicking over an intricate and jazzy piano melody. Heavy, heavy stuff and so colourful and soulful. “unformidable/call it out” is another fantastic cut, with subtle piano keys, vocals and basslines intertwining with vocal cuts and another infectious groove, while “og outro” has this incredible keys throughout that add so much colour and texture to the sound, perfectly closing the project out. Last Nubian and Sweet Fruity Brunch have really delivered an incredibly dynamic, groovy and soulful new project with Babylon Shuffle EP, perfect for the dance floors.
