Why you should listen: Brooklyn-based artist L’Rain has been making some of the most lush, emotive and textured music in recent years. 2021’s Fatigue was a stunning body of work and what got me into her incredibly emotive and powerful music, through lyrics of self-love and understanding and dreamy instrumentation that make me feel like I’m floating in space. I Killed Your Dog is L’Rain’s new release and it’s just as captivating, spiritual and ethereal as her previous projects, as she steps further into an immersive sound, with incredible compositions that are just stunning in every sense of the word. From the incredible bass, synth and saxophone melodies on “Our Funeral”, to the incredibly powerful composition on “Uncertainty Principle” and “New Year’s UnResolution”, L’Rain’s incredible vocals and mesmeric instrumentation captures a lot of the emotion in her lyrics about love, loss, figuring out life and all its complexities. The drumming on the closing track is infectious and beautiful too. “5 to 8 Hours a Day (WWwaG)” has these incredible guitar leads that create this stunning and beautiful melody, with synth leads and basslines creating this immersive atmosphere that is one of the highlights on the album. The chanting on “Sometimes” is hypnotic too, while “Knead Bee” has this mesmerizing sound that bursts into life with drumming and euphoric synths. “Clumsy” is also a powerful, moody and ethereal moment with incredible guitar leads and basslines that create such an emotive moment on the album. On I Killed Your Dog, L’Rain brings stunning compositions, immersive soundscapes and personal lyricism that together make for an incredibly potent and beautiful listen.
