Why you should listen: I’m not going to lie, this album made me a little emotional. Having been a fan of jaimie branch’s music for quite a few years now, hearing the news of her passing was extremely saddening to the world of jazz. Her series of Fly or Die albums, (especially FLY or DIE II: bird dogs of paradise) are just exceptional, with so much intensity, power and emotion to them. As a composer, she was utterly fearless, creating immense soundscapes with her band, as well as providing an incredible soundtrack to this dystopia. She was already working on new music at the time of her death, and it felt right for her family, (led by sister Kate Branch) and her band (Jason Ajemian, Lester St. Louis, and Chad Taylor), to continue her legacy with one last body of work representing her aura and talents, and the results are splendid. Fly or Die Fly or Die Fly or Die ((world war)) is eclectic, uplifting and a celebration of her talents as a composer. Tracks like “borealis dancing” and “baba louie” are colourful, engaging and mesmeric tracks, with such richness in sound, as each musician is able to create spiritual moments, with emphatic drumming, stunning percussion, wind instrumentation and vocals throughout. The incredible infectious bass-led groove of “bolinko bass” is another highlight, while the punk-like energy of “take over the world” is truly hypnotic and incredible. jaimie branch’s legacy continues, with an album that is heartfelt, potent and emotional. Fly or Die Fly or Die Fly or Die ((world war)) is a truly stunning and hypnotic body of work. Hoping you’ve been resting easy, jaimie.
