Why you should listen: Punchy, layered, textured and incredibly well produced, Squid’s sophomore album takes their sound in a new, more refined direction. Having been introduced to them via their 2021 debut Bright Green Field, I’ve been enamored by their ability to combine so many different sounds and influences in an album that is cohesive and incredibly well-sequenced. Their fiery compositions are always spellbinding and mesmeric, and with O Monolith, they take a more controlled approach. The quieter and more delicate moments feel more potent – they have the ability to create incredibly captivating riffs and melodies, while keeping the electricity of their music ever-present, such as on “Siphon Song”, one of my favourites on the album. A vocodered, gentle melody gives way to distorted guitar riffs that build on the energy they’re able to create, making for a slow-burning masterpiece. The playfulness of “The Blades” is also a highlight, as they meander between different melodies and tones, perfectly capturing the intensity of their sound, while “After The Flash” has a gentle, reflective melody that builds and builds throughout, with eclectic sounds and instrumentation that adds to the experimental nature of their sound. “If You Had Seen The Bull’s Swimming Attempts You Would Have Stayed Away” closes the album out perfectly, with a combination of contrasting tempos and sounds, yet with a groovy and infectious energy that really just makes me want to play the album all over again. The nuanced sounds and melodies on O Monolith make it a captivating and fascinating listen, and showcases Squid’s versatility and potential for absolute greatness.
