New York-based drummer and producer Anysia Kym has released a collaborative album with South London-based Jadasea titled Pressure Sensitive. Anysia Kym has been making some of the most futuristic electronic music for a little while now, with her striking productions taking elements from club, rave, drum n bass among other electronic genres, as well as hip-hop. The soundscapes Anysia Kym is able to create on this 14-track, 36-minute are all utterly hypnotic. Her incredibly dynamic grooves, ambient soundscapes and intricate sampling are all on full display, with Jadasea meandering through the project with ease, providing some muffled, disorienting verses among Anysia Kym’s ever-changing soundscapes.
The colourful “Nothing Comes to a Sleeper But a Dream” opens the album out strongly, with synths and chimes that add an ethereal quality to the track, with Jadasea’s smooth voice rapping his dark rhymes over a jittery beat. “On Official” is a proper electro-techno banger, with heavy, thumping drums, and a quirky energy that sounds playful yet so hard-hitting at the same time. She really shows off her talents and versatility on this track. “Hard2sey” is a spooky-sounding track, with its synths, and its drum n bass sample that Jadasea raps effortlessly over, at a slightly faster pace than usual, but it works so well. “Bad Mind” has light drums and a swirling synth, with Jadasea’s incredibly visual and emotive raps adding to the incredible sound. It picks up again with the frantic “b.f.f.r.”, while “No ID” is a standout, with Anysia Kym’s incredible electronic banger. The bass-heavy drums combined with the electronic sample make for an energetic song, with Jadasea’s raps adding a dynamism to it that is infectious. Speaking of infectious, the fast-paced drumming on “99.3” is precisely that, with I believe Anysia singing on the refrain? The lo-fi hip-hop production on “Darling” makes it a perfect soundscape for Jadasea to rap about his mental health effortlessly. The fast-paced soulful cut “Uh Huh” is another great moment on the album, while “problem stays” contains a more melodic and slow-paced groove, as Jadasea’s dystopian raps are perfect for the slow, disorienting production. “Protection *” has this almost distorted vocal sample, a disorienting groove, and melody that makes it an intriguing cut. “Don’t Make Light/By Design” is another club / techno banger with it’s heavy, fast-paced tribal drums, and a sampled speech that adds to the texture of the track. “Always B Around (Outro)” contains this R&B sample with colourful synths and Jadasea playfully rapping along. It’s an interesting way to close the album out, but one that is fitting to the level of experimentation Anysia Kym & Jadasea were going for on this album.
With Pressure Sensitive, Anysia Kym & Jadasea have created a unique listening experience, taking from club, rave, electronic and hip-hop influences from both New York City and London music scenes, and putting together a project that is captivating, incredibly engaging and at times disorienting, in the best way possible. This is probably their best creative work each artist has been involved with, and can’t wait to hear what’s next.
