With vintage kick drum, dusty piano loop and melodic harmonies intact, Brooklyn MC Skyzoo knew he wanted to rhyme over the unapologetically New York sounding beat within ten seconds of Pete Rock pressing play. “‘The crazy thing about this beat is that I made it in ’94,'” recalled Pete Rock. “‘This beat is 25 years old. I never retouched it or re-did it. It came out of the SP-1200. This was when I was making “The World Is Yours” and those sessions.”
“It’s All Good” finds S-K-Y levitating over a Pete’s secret “SP-1200 stashed beat, giving respect to the era it was made in, and providing modernity by explaining how New York and the world has changed since. Retropolitan, the upcoming joint album by the two New York Hip Hop artists, was recorded in 14 days at the top of 2019 when the project was originally announced. The joint effort has remained in the mixing stages until they felt it reached perfection for listeners. Simply put, the 36-year-old MC describes Retro as a “love letter and wake up call to the city.”
All 12-tracks produced by Pete Rock, with features by Styles P, Benny The Butcher, Conway, Westside Gunn, Elzhi, and Raheem DeVaughn, celebrates two generations of native New Yorker’s putting it down and pulling no punches. Carrying a storied tradition, Skyzoo & Pete Rock capitilized on the opportunity to create context, after observing the simultaneous commodification of their art form and city.
“It’s a New York album, but whether you’re from New York or not, you’re going to love it,” Skyzoo explained to Billboard this week touching on Rock’s everlasting prime of a career in music. “If you love hip-hop, lyricism, and incredible beats, you’re going to love what you’re hearing. [It’s] storytelling and production from a top-three producer ever, but it’s not dated. It’s just if the sound of the hip-hop we grew up on continued to be at the forefront and raised.”
Retropolitan gets released via Mello Music Group on September 20th. “It’s All Good” can be streamed below via Soundcloud. Don’t forget to support!
