Detroit based rapper Zelooperz has been someone I have been interested for a whole now. His unique flow and character make him a perfect for Bruiser Brigade, the collective and label he is part of, alongside fellow Detroit legend, Danny Brown. With the release of his new album, Dyn-o-mite, he goes all out, creating an album that is avant-garde in style and substance.

Over 11 tracks, the talented artist meanders between synth-heavy, eclectic production and soulful cuts as well. “JayJay-Z” kicks off the project with a bass-heavy, warped instrumental with abrasive chains that reverberate throughout. The entire project is produced by Black Noi$e, which explains the dark, eerie sound of the project. “Bootleg,” is an example of a tone that is creepy and unsettling. Zelooperz’ monotonous flow is intriguing and off-kilter as he raps about drugs and his own experiences living in Detroit with women and work. “Easter Sunday” is a clear highlight for me, not only for Earl Sweatshirt’s verse, but the colourful and uplifting, joyous and soulful beat. The album however, as a whole follows the same, dark experimental sound that we’ve come to love about Black Noi$e’s music over the past few years or so. “Born Again” features a hard-hitting boom bap beat with swirling synths and a Zelooperz sounds menacing with his delivery. Overall, this album is an interesting insight into the man’s creative space, and one I hope can help him gain a bigger fanbase and more critical acclaim.
