Ana Roxanne is an intersex Southeast Asian musician based in Los Angeles. Raised in the Bay Area to religious parents, she was part of choirs and always had a passion for making music. It’s the first time I have come across this intriguing musician, which is why I was fascinated by this new project titled ~~~, released via LEAVING RECORDS.
Composed of 6 tracks, the music is fuelled by soothing soundscapes and electronic, slightly glitchy snippets that meander through the synth leads and keys that dominate the tone of this album. “Slowness” especially exemplifies this, with it’s moody, atmospheric production with jumpy electronic effects, whilst tracks like “It’s a Rainy Day on the Cosmic Shore” provide rain samples that pierce through, with samples of the waves approaching the shore. “Nocturne” features angelic vocal samples, whilst “I’m Every Sparky Woman” has more upbeat, colourful electronic rhythms throughout that really bring out the energy of the track. It’s a wonderful bit of music that leads to the closer of the album, “In a Small Valley,” which sees water and wave noises being the dominant sound, with chimes hitting the sound of the water beautifully. Later, there are snippets of a family gathering. Despite the fact that many might consider this a minimalist album, there’s actually a lot to take from this record, as I can tell it’s quite a personal one. Ana Roxanne excels in every way on this album, and I’m looking forward to what she has coming next!
