Please don’t make the same mistake as I did and sleep on Foisey. The Norwich, Conneticut producer is one of the most exciting new producers to come out in recent times. His highly anticipated album Byrds came out earlier in July on House Shoes’ well-respected label Street Corner Music, to critical acclaim and love from his contemporaries and music lovers around the world.
Foisey is back, not with one new release, but two. EA7+ is an album which reworks and re-imagines pop, r&b and hip-hop records from this year in his trademark colourful and soulful twist. Highlights from that that album are ‘Cuff’nSeason,’ ‘Unfamiliar,’ ‘Ruguluh,’ and especially ‘SugarBrown.’ The whole project is bubbly and full of personality, so credit to Foisey for making otherwise mediocre pop and r&b tracks very enjoyable.
NowOrNvr. is an album which, to me, is more experimental in terms of time signatures, sample selections and production technique. With older, classic samples, Foisey brings a grittier, more direct approach, with more drums, more synths and more of that boom-bap shit to bob your head to. The whole album is stellar, so every song is a highlight, but ‘HolditDown.’ and ‘She’sReddy.’ are flawless to me.
Listen to both EA7+ and NowOrNvr. below on Bandcamp, and support/buy the music. Foisey is important to the culture, and so are the Mutant Academy crew.
